Any degree from a big-named university will get somebody somewhere... but probably a Fine Arts degree, seeing as how your educational background doesn't really mean much if people don't see your vision... Just because you can apply the rule of thirds to photography doesn't mean that your subjects will be interesting enough to sell. The majors the slackers I've known have gone into have been Political Science, Philosophy and English.

Excellent question!!! Very good idea to be thinking about what will not work before you invest years and many dollars in it.

A specific thing to avoid would be getting a degree online. I'm not saying I agree that online education isn't good education - I'm saying it won't be as valuable in the immediate future as a traditional degree. I, personally, think that online courses can be excellent and will some day be valued more than they are now, but at this point, real on-campus classes are more respected. This is especially true when it comes to graduate degrees. You can get a good MBA online, or a good degree in IT or something like that, but don't even think about getting a PhD online. Even the accredited ones are met with skepticism by others in most fields.

I would say that a degree in sociology will not help you find a job. I know a few people with master's degrees in that field that are working in secretarial positions because there isn't a job market for sociologists below the PhD level and even at that level getting tenure will be challenging because of competition. Interesting field- not much future in it.

A bachelor's in psych won't help or hinder you, but you won't find a job in psychology or counselling without a master's or PhD.

If you major in art or music, take business courses as well, especially courses in entrepeneurialism and marketing. You'll need to know how to find the people who will pay for your art or music. Either that or plan to get a teaching certificate along with your art or music degree.

Just some thoughts off the top of my head. Great question!

There are really no useless degrees, an education is always a way to better yourself. As far as getting a degree that will not benefit you financially, Really it's all dependant on your professional goals...could you give us more information on what your interests and goals are?

THIS IS FOR DAWN...this is a very good question to ask. There was no reference to fashion in this question. Did you read it?
***Also a sociology degree can get you employed. My nephew has one and he makes a decent wage working for the state.

This question is offensive because I plan on getting a degree in fashion & culture and I'm not planning on getting a job with it. I just want the education. So to assume that some degrees are useless is absurd.

THIS IS FOR BRAZLEBRIDGE: Yes I read the question. The question asked what are some "useless" degrees that the person asking the question should know not to major in. SO, I said that there is no such thing as a useless degree and in fact, the degree I am going to get is not for work, it's for me. Did you read it?

Well, my wife and three friends have " Art History" degrees....no one has ever worked in that field....but they're all doing okay...accountant ( self-taught) at a Real Estate management co., Managing a liquor dept. in a large Groc. chain, running a cleaning and maintenance svc ( apt bldgs) and running a very busy business doing embroidery for logos and such on hats and clothing for businesses, golf courses, benefits etc.....Soooooo you never know!! Good luck.

No degree is useless; some are just harder to find jobs with.

Unless, of course, you want to teach the subject.
