The average lawn uses about 1 - 1 1/2 inch of moisture a week. This should be provided by rainfall or 1 to 2 deep watering a week. It takes about 2 hours to apply 1" of water with average size hose and water pressure.

It depends on so many things -- whether or not the lawn is in shade or in sun, what part of which country you live in, what the soil is like, which watering method you use (hose, underground drip system, sprinklers, etc.), and what time of the day you water, and how much precipitation your area gets. The best way to get a good answer to your question is to ask gardeners who live in your area and have had success with their lawns how they did it. There is no single answer for your question that applies to all climates and conditions.
