India is well on its' way to becoming a superpower. However, the country has a long way to go.

Cities like Mumbai and Delhi have bustling tech sectors that rival those of any industrialized country. These areas are modernizing rapidly. Unfortunately, India will have many growing pains in the near future. The growth of new businesses will require infrastructure that the incompetent and corrupt local governments cannot easily provide. Also, the problem of the poor and rural residents exists.

The problems of government corruption and the rural poor need to be addressed. Then, after about 20-40 years of stellar economic growth (like the U.S. after WWII) India will be ready to join the world stage as an industrialized country and perhaps a member of the G8.

A superpower though? That will depend primarily upon military might.

India is still a developing nation. There is poverty all over the country. Militarily and economically India is still a weak country compared to US and other developed countries. Indian economy is labour oriented. We supply cheap labour to developed nations. Even after 60 years of Independence India could not solve its problem with Pakistan. Even Pakistan has become strong and India cannot dictate any terms as the US. Becoming a super power is only a pipe dream.

Yes. In about 75 years.

Uplifting those in poverty now and those who will be born into it is a mammoth task. Here is context: 700-million are in poverty right now; the population will grow by another 400-million in the next 40-50 years and most of that added population will be born into poverty. The vast majority of 1.1-billion people, then, needs to be pulled out of destitute poverty (the kind where a person considers bland-tasting corn meal from a UN-logo truck a feast) in the next 50 or so years.

The desire amongst Indians appears to be strong to modernise and tackle the real issues facing the country. The elephant has been beaten, battered and bruised for the last 1000 years. Its recovery has just started. Perhaps in 100 years, she will have the moral authority to speak on global issues - if not settled by then unfortunately - such as land claims by aboriginals of the Americas.

Of course, that's all possible if we don't toast the planet from global warming!
