whammy bars change the pitch of the guitar their a little bar that screw and unscrew on the bridge of your guitar you can either shake them o get a vibrato effect of push it down or pull it up

it will NOT get your guitar out of tune as long as you have a good whammy designed not to get your guitar out of tune such as kahler locking whammy

there are also diffrent types of whammy bars a tremelo style one can only go down and can only dne your bridge in and will only make your guitar deeper however if you have a floating tremelo or floyd rose you can also pull your bridge back and make it go higher zack wylde of BLS has a floyd and uses it for such things as dive bombs

they work with springs there set upon spring

and they are not esential to a guiatr solo staying in time is essential to a guitar solo and staying in key is essential a whammy is just an effect such as a wah wah pedal or a flange pedal or and echo effect or reverb effect

the guitarist tom morrelo(ex rage against the machine) now audioslave actually uses a whammy PEDAL wich creates the same effect and changes the pitch of the guiatr but it does it to a larger extent actually creating a couple octave change of pitch you can hear this in killing in the name of solo

peace and love

Whammy bar allows the guitarist to quickly alter the chord's pitch without causing damage to the instrument. Before whammy bars, one would have to apply pressure on the guitar neck--often with disasterous results. Jimi Hendrix didn't have a whammy doing "The Star Spangeled Banner"--a song that did inspire the whammy bar's inventor.

"Bang A Gong" by The Power Station (with vocals from the late Robert Palmer) is a fine example of whammy bar use.

Normally on all string instruments, a vibrato effect is achieved by "wiggling" the string on the fretboard. This is the same for guitar, however the guitar is unique because it is a strummed instrument, and can play up to 6 notes at a time. The whammy bar bends the pitch on ALL the strings allowing the performer to use vibrato while playing blocked chords as well as single notes.

when u press on the whammy bar, it raises your bridge up a certain amount depending on how hard you press, which changes the pitch of the note(s) your playing, but dont press to hard, or you'll send your guitar way out of tune, or break a string if there old strings..
