It starts almost as soon as you fill out the paperwork. You can even do it online now. As for how long it takes, although the post office won't give you an estimate on time, I have yet to wait more than 5 days for a piece of mail to arrive after changing my address. What basically happens is that your mail goes to your original post office, the mail is stopped from being delivered, it is re-routed to your new post office, and then it is delivered to you. It basically adds about 2 days to the normal time of delivery. Wait until Tuesday (or Wednesday if you can) and if it doesn't show up, fill out the change of address paper-work and expect to see it in a few days. Most likely, if it was mailed correctly and with normal postage, you should get it in 3 days so Tuesday would not be unlikely.

it doesn't take long; usually a week or 2, but it may also depend on how quickly the person doing this task works. if the piece of mail is extremely important, have someone that you trust retrieve your mail and send all of it to you at your new location. after the important piece has been received, apply for the mail forwarding through the post office.

Five days is the normal number of days for mail delivery but can be delayed due to human factors.
