i have a floppy drive that works fine, they are removable

If the laptop fails to recognize a bootable CD at startup, this could be a hardware malfunction with the CD drive. However, you may try removing and reseating the CD drive. If that does not work, then you may contact a technician who can help you out in fixing the hardware problem.

Can you hotswap the cdrom into the Ultrabay once the system is up? Does it work then or does the system lock up? Have you tried getting into the bios and running the internal diagnostics? There may be some hardware issue going on.

This laptop is pretty old, the last 600 series was mfg around 2000.
