for starters, getting anything pierced and the pain associated with it will depend on you and your pain tolerance. It may hurt some people but not others.

Risks: About the same as getting anything else pierced (lobes inc)...there is always a risk of infection just like when you get your ear lobes pierced.

Pain Factor: Depends on your tolerance. For me personally, I was in grade 11 when I decided to get another piercing in my right ear... both lobes were done years ago and then I decided to get the cartilage done (top). Personally I'm a wuss however I thought it hurt less getting that one done than my lobes...BUT I found the cold really really hurt it... it would almost be like an earache ...burning and it did swell. I couldn't put a back on the earring for the longest time, had to change the earring to another stud (longer post) before I was suppose to, but it's fine today...

The only other thing i'll say is this: Make sure you have permission, I think until you're 16 you still need parental permission for your ears and either 16 or 18 for any body piercing. Hold off on getting it done until you're in high school (15/16 years of age).

I'm glad you want to wait. I can answer your questions from personal experience. I got my first cartilage piercing at 14 and it was easier to take care of then I thought it would be. The risks. well you are pushing a needle through your skin and removing part (hollow needle). Get it done with a needle which means going to a piercing shop and paying a little more but it's safer, heals faster and hurts less. The guns just push broken cartilage aside ... they aren't safe for anything. Risks can include infection, allergic reaction, not healing, you know, general things when you cause an injury. It should hurt a little bit even if it's just a sting and some swelling. Like I said above, you are pushing a needle through your body and inserting a foreign object. The pain shouldn't be too bad, the piercing itself takes about three seconds. It hurts about three times more just because cartilage is harder if your pain tolerance is like mine and really high, or 10 times more if you aren't good with pain at all. If you take care of it properly, directions will be given to you by the piercer but sea salt soaks at night, cleaning in the morning, not playing with it a whole lot, not over cleaning (that can make the healing take longer because you are constantly ripping it back open), not trying to change the jewelry too soon, general stuff, everything should be fine. The healing time is about 6 months to a year. On average 6 to 8 months is about right but on the extremes a year or more. If you have questions when you get it done, call the person that did it or go see them. If you want more information or anything feel free to email me.

Get it done professionally and legally. If you aren't old enough to get it done on your own get a parents permission. You only have to be like 13 or 14 to get a piercing with parent permission. To get something without a parent you MUST BE 18. Don't do it at home, home piercings run a risk of getting infected five times more likely than one that was done by a professional. Anyone that advises going to Claires or doing it on your own does not know what they are talking out. A professional wouldn't advise it because it's not safe.

It hurts more than a lobe piercing, but not enough not to do it. The most important thing is to go to a professional body piercer to get it done. The body piercer uses a needle that pushes out the cartilage in the hole. Someone at the mall, with a piercing gun or one of your friends doing it, will just spread the cartilage out. The difference is the piercing done by a professional will heal alot faster and hurt alot less while it's healing. I've heard people say they had cartilage piercings done at the mall that never healed. I had mine done at a tattoo shop and they all healed quickly with no complications. As long as you go to a professional and use quality jewelry ( gold or stainless steel) and you keep it clean while it heals, you should be fine. I think the worst case scenario is just that it could get infected and then all you would have to do is take out the jewelry and let it heal. It's very low-risk if it's done right.

It doesn't hurt too much when you get it done but if you tap it while it's healing its painful. You have to make sure you keep it clean especially the 3 months after you get it done when its the easiest to get an infection. You have to make sure you clean it at least 3 times a day and when you shower make sure you leave no soap of shampoo on it. If you don't take care of and clean it with the ear piercing solution you can get an infection which can cause it to swell up and release puss. You also risk getting kieloids which are bumps that form where you pirece and can grow really big. I have 7 piercings and they've all been fine. My sister though had one of hers get infected and she grew a big disgusting keiloid and had to go get injections to make it go down. If you don't finish the injection treatment they come back so be careful. Hope this info was helpful and not discouraging. I think piercings are awesome so go for it but take care of them

There really aren't too many risks with getting your cartilage peirced. There aren't many viens in the are of the ear, so you don't have worry about those being damaged. Sometimes if you don't clean the piercing when you first get it done, it might get infected.... but its nothing serious. And I think that goes with pretty much all piercings.

Also, I didn't think it hurt any more than a earlobe peircing.

ok, at the starting up, it takes about a year for it to fully heal and not at all harm in case you sleep on it. I were given mine performed with a piercing gun.....it really is truly the incorrect thanks to do it because once you get it performed this type, the cartilage interior the ear shatters and therefor takes way longer to heal. My suggestion, get your moms and dads permission and pass to a body piercer. they use a small hollow needle it really is extra well-off on the cartilage and therapeutic time is often on the most 6 months.

im 16 and when i was like 14 i got my cartlidge peirced it was fine.on a scale of 1-10 ... 10 being worst and your ear lobes are like a 5.. your cartledge is like a 6. It pinches like for a split second just make sure you remember to get it on the side you DONT sleep on, and ther is really no risks the WORST possible situation, you could get some werid infection and make your cartlidge get liike deformed? but i highly doubt it if you have your lobes peicrced and ther wasnt complications.
But wait like a year cuz after you get it your going to want more, also if like your parents wont let you or w/e it works just as well to just do it yourself! but dont worry just go for it.

I got two piercings in my right cartilage about one year ago. It hardly hurt anymore than piercing my ear lobe. But, it will take about one year before it i totally healed, and you cannot sleep on that ear for months! it can get pretty sore...but it looks really cute! Looking back, I am glad I did it!
