Scruffing is when you pick up a hamster by the excess skin on the neck and back. I scruff my hamster so i'm able to trim his nails, i DO NOT randomly pick him up this way. I only do it because its the only way to get him not to move. Also, is this a good way to trim the nails of a hamster?

I am a show breeder with over 100 hamster and do scruff my hamsters when necessary. I don't scruff with just a little pinch though, I make sure I'm scruffing a good amount of the skin. You also want to make sure that you scruff high enough to restrain the hamsters head. The only thing that you need to make sure of before you scruff is that the hamster doesn't have anything in its cheek pouches. If there's anything in the pouches when the hamster is scruffed, the pouches could be torn or cut.

I do just let mine dangle most of the time but you need to be sure you're scruffing a good amount of skin to allow them to dangle. I don't "pinch" the skin between the tip of my finger and the tip of my thumb, but curl/bend my index finger in (like it would be when making a fist) so I'm using my whole finger and whole thumb to scruff.

If you don't have anyone to hold him for you, then you need to hold him on your lap. Scruffing can be very dangerous, especially the older your hamster gets..

* sit with your hamster on your lap facing away from you with its rump against your stomach to keep your hamster from backing up.
* hold your hammy upright with its back against your body by placing your hand lightly around your hammy's chest. Important: make sure the hind end is supported (either on your lap if you are sitting down, or with the other hand). With practice, you can even hold one foreleg out by placing it between your fingers using this method.
* if necessary, gently wrap up your hamster's body and three of its legs in a light towel, leaving one leg free for clipping the nails. If you choose this method be careful not to wrap too tight (this may impede breathing) and take a break between legs to reduce stress and the chance of overheating.

the hamster may settle down better if you put a towel on your lap that has been warmed a bit in the microwave..unless it is warm weather.

in basic terms carry her on your hand. I scoop mine out, and permit him run around a small section, or up and down my arm or leg. You do could be careful, because of the fact they have no concern of intense places-so make certain you carry him down low. And, they're services to leaping-so yet another excuse to hold them low or take a seat on the floor once you carry/play with them. you additionally can purchase a small mini fence, Walmart has them for some funds, in basic terms a small around fence so they might run around and not get away.
