Glory be and behold, All mathematics is tautology. while considering that, i am a north wind to ripe figs. lest ye shall not forget, apart from the ascetic ideal, man—the animal, man—had no meaning hitherto. his existence on earth had no goal. "why have man at all?" was a question without an answer...the ascetic ideal offered mankind meaning...that hatred against everything human, even more, against everything animal, everything material, this disgust with the senses, with reason itself, this fear of happiness and beauty, this desire to get away from all semblance, change, becoming, death, wish, desire itself—the meaning of all this, should we dare to comprehend it, is a will to nothingness, a will running counter to life, a revolt against the most fundamental presuppositions of life; yet it is and remains a will! and, to repeat...rather than want nothing, man even wants nothingness.

Fine question, well written.
What interests me are individuals' values.
So when I create another society I ask where they are on the line between the worst totalitarian and the most perfect individuals-cooperating-in-a-society "main sequence" of development. then I work backward to details of dress, buildings, social manners, government, love, arts and so forth.
But what interests me is my necessary moral (realistic) ethical central character--what he's specifically going to have to do and
how he has to go out it the categorically right way--so my reader will have fun watching him be good enough to be interesting as an example of effective selfhood.

I'd create a race of talking cats. I think cats are the most perfect creatures. They would be emotional, artistic, sensitive. They would paint & write songs. They would write & dance & make films. They would be very intelligent, peaceful beings. They would have all the qualities of cats: serene, graceful, balanced but think & talk like humans. That would be cool!

That's a hard question to answer since my only frame of reference for existence is human. So I would make them like us, only I would leave out whatever it is in our makeup that caused mankind to develop religion.
