Recently my dad bought a new DVD player and his TV and DVD player are close to my piano in the living room and he does not want to move his TV and DVD player to other places in the house. Everytime I am practising the piano, he watches TV or DVD and he turns the volume up. I asked him to wear a headphone when watching TV and DVD but it seems he's watching TV or DVD WITHOUT a headphone ON PURPOSE as if he doesn't like me playing the piano at home. I need it to be quiet when practising the piano coz I'm preparing 9th grade piano exam (where 11th grade is the highest grade in piano) and I need to concentrate when practising. What can I do to make him NOT watching TV or DVD when I'm practising the piano WITHOUT myself moving out ?
I have talked to my dad about it but it doesn't work. I was asked not to practise on electric piano coz I'm doing advanced piano so i can't use headphone either. Also I don't want to move the piano. Any advise?

it sounds like he is being a selfish pig, i wonder is he jealous of your success? certainly sounds that way if hes deliberately thwarting your progress, what about your mum? could she have a word? also your piano teacher should be made aware of the situation. if it was my child, i would help and encourage as much as i could, because id be proud of their achievements, if none of this works you may have to consider your options, as its important you think of your goal, good luck with your future

Keep on practicing! maybe the novelty of his DVD wil wear off soon. You need some support with this one. Can your mum or someone else have a word with him. Just make an agreement that you'll look at things again when you've done your exam. He isn't being very supportive. Watching a dvd isn't that important is it? Just look on this as a challenge! Good luck with your exam!

your family needs respect for each other. How about you tell your dad to pick a time table so when it is your time playing piano, you can play it and when it is hid time to watch DVD, he can watch it. if you do this, both of you at least will not going to start a fight and both of you maybe satisfy with each other.

I had this problem. I solved it by buying my daughter an electric piano with weighted keys which was acceptable for her exams. Now she can put her headphones on and practise without disturbing anyone else.

He sounds really selfish to me. Does'nt he want you to do well? Surely there must be a solution to this and if he wont move then maybe you need to, no you should'nt have to, but at least you will be able to concentrate. If i was you i'd make his bloody life a misery from now on!

sounds like your father doesn't respect you. this is not something that you will solve. sadly, your father only seems to care about his own needs. speak with your piano teacher about other options.
bite your tongue and try not to engage your father in a verbal battle. he will always win as long as you live in his home. i wish you continued success with your piano playing.
