I've heard about a way to call Vietnam through internet-based-phoneline with fixed payment of 20 something bucks a month. Does anyone know about that?

My wife's in Vietnam and I also happen to be an Internet consultant who travels often to Vietnam.

Technically, you could use any Internet based phone service to make calls to a Vietnam phone. The more popular services are Yahoo Messenger and Skype. However, making calls through such services are usually more expensive than some of the phone card services available. I use services from Vietnam80, which has a tol charge of 9 cents/minute, where Skype has a tol charge of 15 cents/minute. On the other hand, it is cheaper to make calls from Vietnan to the U.S> by using an Internet phone card. Most charge less than 10 cents/minute.

The cheapest way to make calls to Vietnam is through an instant messaging service, such as Yahoo Messenger or Skype. Both are free of charge if the other party is also using teh same instant messenger service. I use Skype almost exclusively to keep in touch with my wife. I call her twice a day and have both audio and video (I can ehar and see her) with excellent quality.

If you want to get real technical, you can setup a VOIP phone and setup the phone in Vietnam with a U.S. phone number. You will pay toll only to where the phone number is supposed to originate, but the phone will ring and can be answered in Vietnam or anywhere where the VOIP phone is connected.

I hope this helps!

There are many different ways to call Vietnam via the internet. Google voip and Vietnam for a list. I assume that the party you will be calling has access to a computer. If this is the case, they can buy internet voice time at any Viet post office or internet cafe .My wife uses Voize Phone, it costs about 1200 d/minute for the card and 2000 d/minute for the phone time. (8 cents a minute)
If they own a computer, you can also send them a copy of Skype software. I wouldn't recommend this because it is illegal in Vietnam. Although I doubt the government would prosecute and jail a single user, there have been cases of internet cafe owners getting serious jail time for installing Skype on their computers.

this link will allow you to download a "soft phone" and you can use your headphones/mic like you would your reagular phone and allows to make a few "free" calls including long distance. Draw back is the long distance calls last only about 5 minutes then disconnects. http://www.internetcalls.com/en/index.html
