Air is a mixture of Nitrogen gas, Oxygen gas, Argon gas, etc.

There are three states of matter solid, liquid and gas. (Ignoring plasma and collapsed matter states, Bose-Einstein condensates, etc.)
Air is assumed to be mostly a mixture of Nitrogen, Oxygen, Carbon dioxide, moisture vapor, and other trace gasses. Air is the gas which surrounds this planet.
Gas is a state of matter. Often the term is used in the singular, "a gas", indicating a particular composition, often a pure compound.
The question you are asking is more about semantics than chemistry. When talking about the gaseous state we use the term gas. We also use it when describing a particular example of this state: Poison gas, laughing gas, powered by gas, and other examples.

Usually when you say "air" you're talking about the atmosphere, and it's made up of gasses, roughly.
78% Nitrogen
20% Oxygen
1% Other.

Gas describes the state of the matter where the molecules or atoms are most active. As opposed to liquids or solids. Nitrogen we assume to be in a gaseous form unless we specify "liquid Nitrogen".

Air also has other things in it ...water vapor, very small particles of dust, etc.

air and gas both are not same. Air is mixture of various gases. Gas is a part of air which contains a particular element in gaseous state Eg hydrogen gas

Gas generally refers to all substances in gaseous state.

Air is only a mixture of special gases mainly including nitrogen, oxygen, and argon.

After reading the following responses, I'd like to add that
liquid air exists as in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_air .

gas is the state of matter distinguished from the solid and liquid states by: relatively low density and viscosity; relatively great expansion and contraction with changes in pressure and temperature; the ability to diffuse readily; and the spontaneous tendency to become distributed uniformly throughout any container
oxygen isn't a liquid nor solid, its a gas.

I think that air is a mixture of gases. Gas is pure.

Matter is either solid liquid gas or plasma. Air is matter it is not solid liquid or plasma. It is a gas.

yes, both same, BUT one is collection of gases(air) and one is part of air (gas)
