okay, assuming your router is a linksys router (they are the most common) go to your first computer, right click on your "my computer" icon and select properties. At the top, select the tab that says computer name. Make sure the name of the computer is unique, below that it will give you an option to select either workgroup or join a domain. Leave the workgroup option selected and type a workgroup name in the space provided. you can use any name you want. go to the second computer and follow the same steps there, Make sure the computer name is unique, but the work group name is the same. This should enable you to share files.

You didn't specify your operating systems. I will answer for windows XP. Simply:

1. plug both of your computers into the router.
2. go to control panel and run "Network Setup Wizard". Run through the setup wizard. Pick a name for your network. I usually just leave it at the default MSHOME. You have to make sure that the network name you are using on both PC's is identical. Be sure to enable "File and Printer Sharing" in the Wizard.
3. After completing the Wizard reboot as prompted.
4. When your machines are rebooted, you will now have an area called "My Network Places" pinned to the start menu.
5. In My Network places you will be able to see the files and directories that have sharing enabled on each computer. By default, you will have a "SharedDocs" folder for each computer. You can simply put the files you want to share in SharedDocs or enable more sharing areas on your computer.
6. You can actually share entire drives, so that you can use the files and folders on either computer from either computer. To enable sharing network sharing on a particular drive, directory, or folder, just right click on the item you want to share and go to it's properties. In properties, there will be a "Sharing" tab. Just tell your computer that you want to share the resource with other networked computers. You can also decide whether you want the other computers on the network to be able to change or delete items from the shared area.

It's easier than it sounds, just using the wizard, reboot, and enable sharing through properties.

If you have a router, you can access the router maingate...
Go to http://192.168.1.1/ - type in "admin" for both username and password.
Once you're in, look around for LAN or DHCP clients...

Another way is to click Start Menu (on your target computer) > Run > type in "cmd", click OK..
Once Comman Prompt has opened up, you can type in "hostname" and it should give you the computer name, this is your target computer...

Then you go to your computer (on the same network obviously)...
Go to Start Menu > Run > type in the name of computer (with prefixed \\).

(you can also get the computer name by right-clicking on My Computer > Propeties > Computer Name "Full Computer Name:", that will work also instead of typing in "hostname" in Command Prompt").

Example: I type open "cmd" - my hostname is "NUCLEAR" - I go to a different computer on the network and I click Start > Run and type in "\\NUCLEAR" (yes, with 2 backslashes!) and hit OK..
It should open up the machine called NUCLEAR (the shared documents)...

I'm sure there's alternatives such as network scanners.. but eh.
Dys.
