Wetlands are the interface between land and water. The land itself need not be covered with water to make a wetland; all that is required is a high water table in the soil, high enough that the plants which grow there must have special adaptations to live under the wet conditions. Such plants are called hydrophilic, or water-loving, and are used to delineate wetlands.
