My son is 47 and when he was born I used Dreft. He NEVER had diaper rash; his clothes were clean and smelled great at all times; i used cloth diapers and they were always white and I never used bleach. I suggest trying Dreft atleast. And forget this business about cold water. Babies clothes need to be washed in very warm water ...
Good luck and god bless you and that lucky little baby.

Do not use regular laundry detergent, as the baby may break out. Go ahead and get some liquid ALL clear, as it has no perfumes in it. Dreft is also a liquid detergent made specifically for baby laundry. It is perfume free as well, but is a little pricey and hard to find except for in baby stores.

You can, but it is advisable to use "gentle" detergent. I use it anyway, as I have very sensitive skin. Personally I find Zero really good. A book I have that is put out my my provincial health board recommends to put baby stuff through the rinse twice, second time with vinegar. It helps to neutralize anything unwanted on the clothes. Can't imagine it smells very good though. Other than that you can see if you can find what is called a Laundry Disk, I use them all the time and the only thing they are not strong enough for is my boyfriend's work clothes (construction/demolition). They were a gift to me, apparently expensive, guaranteed for 7 years, and no detergent, dyes, perfumes, nothing. Can't get softer on skin than that.

I have always used regular detergent, but I hear that dreft is supposed to be amazing for babies.

You can use normal detergent on the baby stuff, just use less than you would with yours, and dont use any bounce sheats in the dryer. You can also try using zero, it is for delicate materials so is less abrasive, and I would think less iritable. Babies skin could be very sensitive. You could also try washing them once with soap and once without, so you get it all out, but know that they are clean.

You don't really need to use any detergents. Baking soda in the wash, vinegar in the rinse cycle, and a few drops of an essential oil in the final/extra rinse cycle for pleasant scent works quite well, and also quite inexpensive.
