It's good to be proud of where you're from, but you should definitely fly the flags separately together. Fly the one on whose soil you are on a couple of feet above the other on the flag pole. That shows that you respect the land on which you live, but are still proud of where you're from.
Ok, I know you're talking about pictures and not actual flags here, but with those, I would just display both. I would maybe frame a picture of the family with one flag on one side and one on the other. Or something like that.
