No, Bush no longer has the power to start another adventure in the middle east. He must get agreement from both Democrats and Republicans.

The story suggests that the military is making (technical) military plans (of varying scenarios) to engage in military conflict inside Iran.

Iran is not Iraq, it has no bad intention against USA.
Iran does however have a capability to defend itself and the USA is aware that any prospect of invading Iran would be thwarted by Iran's (real) stockpile of chemical and biological weapons.
The USA does not have any meaningfull protection against such weapons and American losses would run to hundreds of thousands of deaths.

The expected options include targetted airstrikes and continued covert activity.

It should be remembered that talk of war just strengthens the Iranian governments position domestically.

People in Iran just don't understand why America seemingly just wants to kill them or to do harm.

This is not news as such plans were conceived over 30 years ago and are constantly reviewed according to latest intelligence.

If you must know , the USA has (military) plans to engage in conflict with many countries but rarely does, it depends on how the political situation changes.

You cannot wait for a political situation to develop and then spend a long time in intelligence gathering and planning of many months or years before engaging in conflict ( you may only have days or hours to react) and the war in Iraq took years to plan.

High on the list for contingency planning are countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon (again), Syria, Yemen, Venezuela ,North Korea, China(re : taiwan) a host of African Countries.

In the 1960s there were hawks in the CIA that suggested that Britain's former Socialist Prime Minister Harold Wilson was a communist with allegiance was to the Kremlin! Plans were even discussed to attack Britain should the need arise in a Nuclear exchange between the USSR and the USA!

Unfortunately, due to excellent planning for war and a new policy of pre-emptive strike (thanks to Bush) any future paranoid US government will bring us much closer to war (and much faster)
on the basis of

1) Questionable Intelligence
2) Dubious political Intent

It will also mean that any potential enemy must consider wether to pre-empt America's pre-emptive strike. Do you see where it is all leading?

It is virtually a guarantee of conflict which could have been resolved by diplomacy.

A sort of high stakes poker game with the chips representing the lives of 6 billion people in a potential nuclear/chemical/biological conflict.

Iran is very dangerous. It seems most Americans are not aware of these international dangers because we falsely believe other countries are "civil" like us. Speak to people that have come from these countries and you will realize how great it is to be an American. Don't rely on the media reports...far more goes on than can be reported. Remember, the media is no longer a source of information, they are the perveyor of an effect. It's not good to get into conflict, but sometimes things must be done to prevent worse things from happening. These people hate us and their goal is to KILL US.

I think it did say Bush gave the go ahead.
Oh well let me go prepare for the draft. Not long before we get one and it'll be my generations war. Iran gives weapons to Iraqi Insurgents if i spelled it right so Im pretty pissed at them but then again look at Russia the number one weapon in the middle east is the Ak-47 But we dont go bomb russia then again im not a politician so i dont know much about that stuff.
