go to start > run > msconfig > startup tab, and scroll down to audio drivers. Make sure they are all started, as they should do so when you turn on the comp. If not, go to control panel, > Administrator tools > services > and scroll down to the audio drivers. On the left side, you have the option to turn that service on or off, or start the service, start them all and see if this doesnt sort the problem out. the computer will stop the ones you started if it doesn't need them to be active, so don't worry about that. If you do all that and it still doesn't work, make sure the speakers are plugged into to not only the computer, but an outlet as well, they might need batteries also. good luck

sounds like you need to install the sound drivers, they may have become corrupted, you should have a disc with the pc called drivers and utilities or similar insert this and install the drivers, if you dont have the disc go to the dell web site and under downloads look for drivers and look for your model and download the sound drivers and install them
