I Love snakes with all my heart. I'm wanting to be a herpetologist. I've been studying snakes and so far have only interacted with them in the wild. I am well read and somewhat experienced. My favorite snake is the Scarlet king snake and if i get on as a pet i would want the scarlet king snake, However i have no idea if they would make good pets. I know if i was a snake i would much rather live in the wild than in a glass cage, but Iove them so much, if I had one as a pet, It would go everywhere with me.

If anyone has any information please LMK,

Thanks guys, youve never let me down before,

James

Yes. My kingsnake, Elvis, is a blotched king and he's a hoot. Even when he's shedding and very cranky, he's funny. Right now he's "blue" meaning he's blind and getting ready to shed....so he's crammed himself in his moist shedding hide (a widemouth bottle with wet aspen)...I go spray him with warm water every so often and he raises his head a little bit to say "thanks pal". He's really miserable when he sheds. But he's also the one whose right up on the edge of the tank when I have company, checking out the people and making sure they are checking out him in all his glory. He's a ham.

If you can, select your snake in person because they all have their own personalities-not so much as a mammal, but they are definitely individuals, so find the one who suits you the best.

I keep my snakes in oversize tanks and I change out the interiors so that they have new places to explore-I don't think their life is bad at all. In fact, if I were reincarnated as one of my snakes I'd be pretty happy, well fed and stimulated.

As a budding herpetologist, I hope you get your dream snake!

King snakes are master escape artists. I lost one last year, even though the cage was locked and sealed. So be careful if you are to take it everywhere with you. Kingsnakes make the most incredible pets. They are not high maintenance like boas and pythons, they are laid back and docile for the most part, and they can be trained to be very friendly. I'm getting a new one tomorrow. I only had the last one three months and I'll never forget him. Also, be sure to get a cage that is virtually escape proof. No part of the lid should wiggle or move, and it should be able to lock very tightly. You don't want your best friend escaping, as curious and adventurous as they are. Good luck with your new baby!

They are lovely snakes, just make sure you get a captive bred one. A lot of the different types of milk snakes (their cousins of sorts) look very similar as well. Snakes like kind of smaller cages when they are young (sometimes big spaces freak them out if they don't have enough hide boxes). However, when your snake is an adult, the bigger the tank you can give them, the better.

From what I've heard, king and corn snakes are the best if you want a snake that doesn't bite. I'm sure if you searched around you could find one.
