My snails in the large 55 gallon have perished. I was vacuuming it today and noticed the shells are all empty. All three of them. The fish are all fine, the catfish are fine, the tank tested fine, yet they are all dead, but the snails in all the small tanks, bought hte same time, are fine. Any ideas what did my little babies in?

What kind of catfish do you have? If you have a Chinese Algae Eater in the tank, it ate them. If you have any Botia in the tank, it ate them. Clown loaches would have eaten them as well.

How often do you vacuum your tank? With larger snails they depend primarily on the food they get from the bottom of the tank and less on the algae from the sides. Younger snails can use extra energy to salvage for algae on tank sides but any energy the larger snails have is crucial. In my larger tanks i generally only vacuum the gravel once every other water change and read the side label on any water conditioner you use when you do your water changes, as the previous post stated....copper and snails don't mix. Also make sure that you are regularly doing water changes rather than just adding water to compensate. Every time you just add water any trace elements are left in the tank to mix with the new water instead of removing them like a normal water change would. Also you can purchase an additive for snails that adds extra food to the tank for them specific to the nutrients they need, this can be found at all major fish suppliers.

I haven't had much luck keeping bigger snails alive in my tanks. The little ones, I have 8000 of. You can try adding Marine Iodine to the water in small amounts. It won't hurt the fish, but is necessary for the snails. It's expensive and don't spill it - it STINKS!

Good luck - I love my snails, too! It's like having my very own aliens living in my kitchen! :-)
