Then get off the computer and fix it.

I'll try to help, kind of hard without knowing your machine. On all the machines I've used, the bobbin drops into a case, which is then placed into a holder that's located below the presser foot. (I'm assuming you have the bobbin filled and ready to sew?) Anyway, you pull the thread out thru the guide on the bobbin case, then drop it into the holder. Keeping the thread straight out in front of the machine, turn the handcrank til the needle goes down into the presser foot and picks up the thread from the bobbin. Oh, you must have the machine threaded for this to work. Next, make sure that the bobbin thread is pulled well out behind the needle, or else when you start to sew, the bobbin will pull it back down into the bottom side of the machine and tangle it all up. I make what's called a 'patience keeper'...this is just a small scrap of material that I sew onto at the end of each completed segment, before I clip the thread from the project. It keeps the needle from coming unthreaded and the bobbin thread from going back underneath. Sorry, I know you're probably more confused than ever now! It seemed so clear til I began to type it out! lol.

I've never worked with an Elna but here's my guesses. Threading the bobbin correctly is important. If you're not sure you're doing it right there may be a chart inside the light case and there definitely should be one in the instruction manual.
Second thing is maybe rewind the thread on the bobbin. Sometimes it doesn't wind right and that can cause problems.
Third thing is check the bobbin case for dust. I don't know about the Elna but on my Kenmore and my mom's Singer you can unscrew a couple of pieces and take a lot of the bobbin case apart. Clean out all the dust and fuzz.
If none of this works you may want to take the machine in for servicing. They can take it apart and clean and oil everything. That may help if nothing major is wrong with it.

Its sounds to me (as a sewing machine technician) that you may be putting the bobbin in the bobbincase upside down. When its in and you pull on the thread the bobbin should turn clockwise, backwards and it will do what you described. If that doesn't work many other thing could be wrong and it needs to be looked at by a service guy like me. Its possible that there could be burrs or a burr where the thread passes across and it getting caught. Good luck.and you can get back to me and I'll help you if these aren't your problem.. I own a few Elnas as well as others.

I also have an Elna, your bobbin thread should be like this: hold your bobbin in your right hand, in your left hand, you have the end of the thread coming from over the top of the bobbin, this is the same direction that thread should be when you insert it in the machine. good luck.

Just a quick addition to Richard's answer (very nice!), be sure that your take up lever is threaded. Don't be insulted by that comment - I've seen sewers with 40 yrs of experience forget or totally miss the take up lever!

I had a Singer that did the same thing. I had it cleaned at a shop & it worked fine after. Also you could ask a shop if you thread it how it should be.
I gave my Singer to my daughter & it worked fine for a long time for her. Then it started to do the same thing on her. She got it in to a shop & was told that a gear in it had broke. She had them fix it & it has run fine from then to now.
Take it in & tell them you want to talk to them before they do any work on it.
Good luck.

My wife said if you have your bobbin upside down it will tangle. Try turning the bobbin over and see if this might work.

if you don't have the manual try going to http://elna.com and looking to see if they have the manual online. If not try looking for a machine that looks similar to yours for the bottom threading instructions.
