That really depends on what type of metal you like.
If you want classic metal try Slayer, Anthrax, older Metallica, Iron Maiden, Venom, Pantera and Testament.
Grind- Carcass, Pig Destroyer, Nasum, and Agoraphobic Nosebleed.
Death Metal - Opeth and Vital Remains
Sludge - Eyehategod, Soilent Green, and High On Fire
Black Metal - Emperor and Goatwhore
Newer thrash metal - Strapping Young Lad, the Haunted, and Nevermore
Something you really can't categorize - Cephalic Carnage

There are TONS of great metal bands. I am definitely a fan of metal. Here are some of my absolute favorites!
Black Sabbath, Judas Priest ( My favorite! ), Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pantera, Iron Maiden, Metallica AC/DC -- are only a few few of my favorites, but these bands are more "old school"
Some new school metal bands are Avenged Sevenfold ( Also one of my favorites ), Shadows Fall, Cradle of Filth, Korn, Disturbed, System of a Down, Alter Bridge ( These guys are kinda alternative too.) Black Goat ( These guys are pretty heavy, more death metal)

Newer ones I like are Arch Enemy, Lamb of God, Trivium, and Machine Head. Old school metal bands that I like are Pantera, Slayer, Motorhead and Anthrax.
