Yes, I know that this is an unconventional question. However, I am in desperate need of an answer. The question plays a role in my novel.

There is no distinct smell to radioactive materials. What people normally think of as radioactive materials(plutonium, uranium) are only a few of the elements that are potentially radioactive. however many elements are considered radioactive if they are the correct isotope. This means that there isn't a smell specific to radioactive material.

You cannot see or smell radioactive material. You can only detect it with special equipment. You may be able to fit that into your novel somehow

If you can smell the radioactive material, your skin is already peeling off. This is why the geiger counter was created, it "smells" radioactive decay and emits rapid clicking sounds when in contact with it.

Hmm,... maybe find a Uranium mine and sniff-around-?

Buy a small sample of ore/s from a 'rock-shop' and smell it for Yourself-?

The 'ore' is about as close as You're going to be able to (safely) get,.. IMPO

'Metallic'-smell-? Like Iron, Copper, or Nickel smells-?

"Acrid","Burning",......?

Try to find out what survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki say their cities 'smelled-like' immediately after the explosions-?

Pretty-damned-Sick, (I know),...but, who else could anyone ask about this subject-?-?

Radio active elements are metals and while I've never smelled these elements, I would hypothosize they have a metalic smell to them.
