Not to sound flippant, but if Elizabeth HADN'T won there wouldn't have been an Elizabeth I!
:)

In other words, just the fact that she accended to the throne and ruled the rest of her life, she "won"; that is, The Church wasn't able to install their Catholic prefered candidate on the English throne.

Also, Elizabeth took great strides to curtail the persecution of Catholics and really attempted to "walk the line" and encourage the attitude of "live and let live" and not impose her faith on the country.

There was a very good miniseries about Elizabeth I recently starring Helen Mirren (who also played Elizabeth II in "The Queen") that should be at any video store. It details very well the battles she fought, politically, militarily and romantically, and how she dealt with religious issues.

Actually, it was her father King Henry VIII who was responsible for the protestant reformation in England. England was a Catholic nation, but good Ol' Henry wanted a divorce from his first wife to marry Elizabeth's mother Anne Boelyn. But the Pope wouldn't grant the divorce. So the King did what he wanted to, and divorced Catherine of Aragon {bloody Mary's mom} and married Anne. However not before he was excommunicated from the Catholic Church. Anyway he figured he was the King, so he and not the Pope should be in charge of the Church of England, thus the Anglican Church was born. And though there were attempts by Bloody Mary and James Stuart to revert England's faith to Catholicism, the Anglican faith is alive and strong in England, With the Queen as the Defender of the faith and the Archbishop of Canterbury head of the Church of England.

Henry was born. Anne was born. Mary was born. The Protestant Catholic Church was born. Liz was born. Anne died. Henry died. Mary died. Liz died. The Roman Catholic Church looks sick. Looks like the Protestants win. So the answer to your question is: if I have to make a pick between your two answers... Liz is the winner!
