Well I'm a MFFL so I'm partial to Avery Johnson, he's gotta be my number 1 choice.
Other coaches I respect... Jerry Sloan, Sam Mitchell, Jeff Van Gundy
And oh yeah Phil Jackson.... hmmm has he ever coached a team that didn't have Michael Jordan, Shaq, or Kobe on it? No he hasn't he's not a good coach not even an okay coach. Wasn't he supposed to be this great mind manipulator that could convince Kobe and Shaq to work together so the Lakers could keep winning championships??? How'd that work out? You take Phil Jackson and put him in charge in Toronto and he can't even do the job Sam Mitchell is doing this year. Phil Jackson sucks at coaching. He's real good at having the best player on his team and looking like a good coach though.

Probably Phil Jackson or Pat Riley but Jerry Sloan would be next.

for playoff record (the only record that counts), you'd have to go with Phil Jackson.
Even though Mike D'Antoni hasn't coached in the Finals yet, I'd still put him in the discussion just for his innovations on the offensive end of the floor. I'm a Spurs fan, but even I have to admit that when the Suns are rolling, it really is beautiful basketball and fun to watch.

this season, and im only talking about this season, it has to be jeff van gundy, hands down!.. i mean, look at the roster of the mavs, they have the deepest team in the NBA talentwise. phil jackson's lakers have been struggling as of late losing 12 of their last 17 games... did anyone expect, with persistent injuries to their 2 star players, that the rockets would be playing so well? much more in the stronger western conference with regular rotation players such as alston, chuck hayes, mutombo, and juwan howad.. give me a coach who can win with these guys in their starting lineup and youve got a coach of the year!!!

I would have to say Red Auerbach of the Old School Boston Celtics...has 9 rings, if I am not mistaken...
At present however, it would definitely be Phil Jackson
