The movie is centered around one guy who believes that he is from a different planet. He believes that he is on Earth on a mission to find out what it is like. When questioned about space and the solar system, etc, he is very informed, and knows things that a normal person would not. The movie's plot is centered on a doctor trying to find out if he really is from outer space, or if he has just been scarred mentally. At the end of the movie, the audience discovers that he used to be a regular guy with a regular job, and family. However, after coming home from work one day, he discovered his wife and child dead. This scarred him, and basically made him crazy. This is a really crude explanation of the movie....The actually movie is actually very touching. If anyone knows the name of this movie...or anything about this movie, please let me know. Thanks in advance!! :)

K-PAX (2001) is a comedic drama about a mental patient who claims he is an alien. During his treatment, the patient/alien, prot ("rhymes with 'goat' and is not capitalised"), demonstrates an outlook on life that ultimately proves inspirational for his fellow patients and especially for his psychiatrist. The movie was based on a novel of the same name, itself similar to the 1986 Argentinian film entitled Man Facing Southeast. It also bears striking similarities to the 1995 film Eyes Beyond Seeing in which an enigmatic mental patient played by Keith Hamilton Cobb claims to be Jesus.

The story opens with a man who calls himself 'prot' (Kevin Spacey) who mysteriously appears in New York City's Grand Central Station. When he claims he is an alien from a planet called 'K-PAX', prot is handed over to a New York hospital psychiatric ward. A Manhattan psychiatrist, Mark Powell (played by Jeff Bridges), is given the task of treating and "curing" prot of his supposed delusions. As the story develops, Dr. Powell becomes quite attached to prot, and starts to believe his seemingly ridiculous claims.

The 2001 film K-PAX was directed by Iain Softley and is based on the first book in this trilogy. Kevin Spacey portrays prot, and Jeff Bridges plays the psychiatrist. There are some very significant differences between the film and the book, however, not merely in detail but also in terms of prot's overall "message".
A white male is picked up by the New York Police after being found bending over the victim of a mugging at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan. Having responded to the police questions with somewhat strange answers, he is transfered to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation. Although not physically ill, he is found to harbour a strange delusion: that he is from a planet called K-PAX. The patient, who calls himself "prot," is eventually transfered to the Manhattan Psychiatric Institute (MPI), where he becomes the patient of Dr. Gene Brewer.
Dr. Brewer, with the help of a journalist Giselle, discovers that prot may simply be an alter ego (the result of Multiple Personality Disorder) of Robert Porter, whose life has been devastated by the murder of his wife and child and his subsequent killing of the perpetrator.
When prot returns to his own planet, Robert Porter is left in a catatonic state. However, Bess (another patient prot had promised to take with him) disappears along with a box of souvenirs prot has been collecting.
