Exams are limited in what they can test about you and your abilities. However, they are the fastest and most effective way to see generally where a large group of people are. If we were only dealing with a few individuals, sure, go into the deeper things which take a lot of time and which really help us to get to know the individual (like say an interview with each one). However, when we are dealing with a large group of people, it's fast, and it does catch the majority of those who do understand the concepts. For the rest, if they have an IEP or anything, they can take the test another way, or show in another way that they know their stuff---especially after talking to the teacher.
