Odysseus was son of Laertes, an Argonaut and King of Ithaca, and Anticlea, granddaughter of Hermes.

Odysseus' father is occasionally disputed. Some say that he was in fact Sisyphus, although it is far more commonly held to be Laertes.

Anticlea died of grief at her son's long absence.

Penelope, Odysseus' wife, and Telemachus, his son, lived with him (as did many servants, one would expect).
