Anything by Vonnegut. I don't think it's ever taken me longer than a day to read his stuff. I can't put it down.

I just read Yes Man, but that's a memoir so I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for. Very good though.

Okay, something short and non-historical. Let's see what we can come up with...
The Princess Bride, by William Goldman
Animal Farm, by George Orwell
The Chosen, by Chaim Potok
My Name is Asher Lev, by Chaim Potok
The Accident, by Elie Wiesel
I Am the Messenger, by Markus Zusak

That was actually pretty hard since I'm a hard-core historical/autobiography type. But none of those said revolve around history are only as long as you draw them out to be.

I have read so many of Anne Rice works that it's hard not forgetting about one book which I loved above all else. It's the only one which has nothing to so with Vampires or any of that sorts. It's called Son of the Mob. It's quite short in comparioson to my usual reads. I once just randomly began reading this book in a library and couldn't put it down. It's simple with no usless desciptions of a greakin shoe looks on some faraway poinless character. It has parts of everything really...but it all revolves around romance..but not really.

Only quick, casual, light-hearted books I can think of off the top of my head happen to be fantasy, so it is somewhat "historical" in the sense that they ride horses and have swords... if that sounds all right to you, the books I'm thinking of are all by John Moore - "Bad Prince Charlie," "The Unhandsome Prince" and "Heroics for Beginners."
