I checked that out because I'm not an astronomer and would like to know when comets will be coming through. It seems that 2007 is not considered to be a good year for comets. The book that was cited most often was the Astronomical Calendar for 2007. I would think that if it is the standard book, you could find it in a good library reference department or else, if you want to have it at hand, check out the price and order it from a scientific book supply hourse or the publisher.

I found an interesting blog, SOHO Comets (http://ares.nrl.navy.mil/sungrazer/index.php?p=latest_news). This has good pictures fromt he spacecraft Soho and reports on current comet events. I thought that it would be compoatible with this question.

Lastly, I found a list of all comets that will be observable from various places in the United Kingdom and I realized that comet information might be general, but if you want to see comets, what you can see from one place might not be seen from another place. If I was seriously interested in seeing comets, I'd get in touch with the astronomy department of the nearest university because I would think that they would have a list that you might be able to request. That's what I would do.

http://www.skyandtelescope.com will tell you what's up each month.

Most comets are not very predictable. Yeah, there are a handful of periodic comets that we know when they're going to show up but predicting how bright they'll get is another matter. (Lots of variables involved.) Virtually all of the naked eye comets of the last ten years were newcomers that we could not, and did not, predict very far ahead of time. Often, it's only a few months or weeks before astronomers realize that we have one which will provide a good show. In the case of the comet last month, it was literally just a few days notice. Sure, people had seen it coming in telescopes for several weeks, but it brightened very suddenly...and nobody had predicted it would be the brightest comet in some 20 years.

That's why is best to simply keep checking the web for what's going on up there.
