Wow u r all wrong.... Drifting was a technique used way back in the early days of racing. In the 1930s, Formula cars had terrible suspension but powerful engines, as a result the rear end would often kick the car out of line in high speed cornering. Drivers learned by applying counter-steer it would allow the car to slide or "drift" around a corner. By doing so the car would drive, exceeding the grip of the tires, at greater speeds than simply slowing down to allow the suspension to keep grip while moving around a corner. Modern F1 cars don't need to do such things because the suspension technology is there to keep the tires on the ground at high speed.
Drifting was later refined in the sport of Rally racing. Almost all the "Japanese" techniques are derived from a simple technique known as the "Scandinavian Flick" a simple momentum change to allow the car to drift. Rally is driven over loose surfaces so u need to drift to maintain speed. If u want to see TRUE drift kings u should look at some of the classic WRC drivers.
JGTC Drivers use to also Drift around corners during their final laps to entertain the crowds.
Its some where between those two that Japanese Drifting came to be.
But the Japanese Didn't invent it.
