Two days ago my pc was running fine now it is taking forever for anything to happen. I have tried 'Disc Cleanup' but it has not made any difference. However I did notice during the cleanup proceedure that I have the following files; Compressed Files 2137649 KB, Temporary Files 333042 KB. What are these files and can I delete them without causing problems?

They are old unused files/temporary files on your hardrive
essentially cluttering and slowing down your computer

Use diskcleanup at least once a week

Defrag and Disc Cleanup will not speed anything up that's noticeable. Disc Cleanup just gets rid of crap you don't use and give you more storage space. Unless you're running out of Hard Drive space, then Disc Cleanup will not make your PC any faster. Defrag is good for your hard drive. You should do it once a month. The speed increase it gives though is not even barely noticeable. If it ran fine two days ago, then I am almost positive your problem is adware taking up Processes. Hold Ctrl+Alt+Del to view your Task Manager. In the bottom it'll say CPU Usage. It gives you a percentage. That number should be 0 or a really low number unless you have something running.

Temporary files you should delete.

I think what you meant was "Compress Old Files", which takes files you haven't used forever, and doesn't delete them, but compresses them so they take up less space. If you do access them again, the computer will automatically uncompress them...no big deal.

You should also run the disk defragmenter. This will group files and programs together that have been spread out over your drive, helping it run faster.

However, I fear the worse. If it was running fine recently, and has just started acting up, you probably have unknowingly picked up some spyware or adware. Run your virus scanner to be sure.

you can clean out your temporary files no problem but leave the compressed files, they are not causing your problems
as your p.c slow down problems occured suddenly this points towards a virus or spyware infection and this should be investigated first
scan both your anti-virus and anti-spyware scanners to elimate infection, anything found should be deleted straight away
also go to http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx,and download the microsft malicous software removal tool, this will scan for 50 of the most dangerous viruses and if found will remove them..note:this does not affect your current anti-virus software
another option is to unplug any usb devices that you are not using, such as usb keys, webcams ect.
finally if you dont have it download windows defender(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en),if you do have it then check to see if its picked up any malware, from experience your p.c will slow down dramatically if defender has found malware,if you havent got it then install it and run a scan
also go to start>control panel>security center>firewall>exceptions tab>then uncheck any exception that you dont use or need, any opening in your firewall is a invitation for any hacker to get on your p.c,but i very much doubt this is your problem
finally i am going to recommend a excellent program called "advanced windowscare personal"avalible from http://www.iobit.com/,this has a one click tool that will clean up your p.c safely and quickly, and it also has a intergrated spyware scanner so i would use this before anything else, you may be suprised this may sort out all your problems
let me know if it works, and also if you continue to have problems
good luck mate

Yup, you can delete those files with no problem. Dont worry about it.
There are several reasons why computer become slow and sluggish.
>The presence Viral and spyware infection is indisputable.
>RAM also another problem. inadequate RAM can slow your computer.
>The presence of bad sector in the hard disk also contributing factor.
>Dont forget to defragment your hard disk as scatter files can affect computer performance.
>And, please repair your computer system registry errors as it can reduces your computer performance.
>Regarding files system, make sure you are using NTFS instead of FAT32.
>To minimize RAM consumption, you better 'end process' the redundant application.

delte thm and do a diskcleanup frequently, and defrag like once a month if you keep downloading or moving files on your system. if that doens't help speed things up, get more RAM memory
