More and more of 'us' have more and more money. Being middle class has nothing to do with money - and I should know, because I've got very little. It's not 'PC' to describe oneself as middle class - and certainly not upper middle class.
For the present, the UK has a prime minister who was educated at a public school and still thinks he's a socialist.
My claim to being middle class (upper middle class) is that my father was a professional (Anglican priest - no money there then - well not while I was the Vicar's daughter), my mother ( a dyed in the wool conservative) also worked all her life (multi-lingual secretary) and she really objected to not being included as one of the 'werkers' (Scouse pronunciation) because she also worked. My parents scrimped and scraped to send me to an independant school until I was 11. The the money ran out and for my secondary education I attended the local state grammar school.

But; I know which knife and fork to use at a formal dinner, I know what clothes to wear at important meetings, so that people take me seriously and are some times amazed that someone wearing definitely 'bourgeois' attire can come out with such obviously socialist statements.

What makes me upper middle class, is the abillity to engage and converse with people on all levels, from all countries and all religions. This is something which the Brits could do in the Indian sub-Continent, before hoi poloi arrived at the end of the 19th century.
It has been said that an open mind is an empty mind. I prefer to say 'noblesse oblige.'
Yes, I can be a snob, but normally only on occasions when people try to put me down. Should the occasion arise, I'll 'pull rank' AND, I don't suffer fools gladly.

the M society hasn't made an appearence in your region? A M society is so called as the rich poor divide widens enormously, the middle class in the middle disintegrate joining one of the two polar extremes, ie rich or poor. Middle class is a standing, or the extent to which you have a place in society, and the gravitas of that place. It means career or property.

The Labour party makes me middle class by the banding by earnings. Of course all are working class as we all have to work during our lives unless we have inherited millions and some was left after George Brown has stolen as much as he can get hold of.

Although middle class is defined by the financial level, there is an important offshoot..... the middle-class can never be carefree and would always hedge risks.... the rich can afford a loss and the poor have nothing to lose!! I am extremely averse to risk!!!

I know for sure I am not middle class...perhaps I like to pretend I am..but I know I'm alot like the rest..living paycheck to paycheck. Honestly...who would admit they were not middle class..wouldn't they have to then admit they are lower class??

It's all about Money .
Imagine a world where everyone is equal ?
Sounds like a joke ,but why is it ?
We all want an need the same things--family an friends.
what is this obsession with wealth ?
Terrorism would not exist if we where all equal .

I'm not poor and I'm not rich. I work for a living. I live in a nice detached home. It's not a mansion, it's not a hovel. Just right for my cat & I & my boyfriend when he stays over. I live in a nice neighbourhood in the suburbs. I came from a working class family. I have to live on a budget. I keep wishing I'd win the lottery so I could quit my job!
