I am planning a trip to Greece this summer. We are thinking maybe 2 or 3 days in Athens to see the major sights and then off to an island. The question is what hotel and sights in Greece, and what island will be the most family friendly. We are pretty low maintenance, but we can't do hostels or anything like that. We prefer Marriot, Hyatt Hilton or at least Holiday Inn.

Marriot, Hilton and Holiday Inn all exist in Athens. I would also suggest a cheaper (not very cheap though, just compared to the Hilton etc.) hotel in a VERY nice area of Athens, near museums and shops and in the centre, less expensive. Go to www.periscope .gr. It is a little uphill, in case you have babies in a pram it is not so practical, but if your children walk it's fine, there is even a bus stopping nearby (022). There are also other hotels I could recommend, but not in so nice and quiet areas (avoid the area around Omonoia square).

As for the islands, I would recommend Naxos in your case, or Sifnos. My favourite islands, with beautiful architecture, monuments (in Naxos) and excellent beaches (Naxos). Sifnos has great food and a family atmosphere. Syros is very family friendly too, but the beaches are not so great.

yes, pack a thong and some roller blades if you can. you'll be doing a lot of sight seeing and it's best to roller blade in ur thong, so you can glide through the streets and stay cool.
