That's the main feature of the computer. All things connect to it. Processor, mouse, keyboard, internet wire (modem or network card), CD drives, memory, video card, everything.
Think of it as a highway of information being zinged here and there.
PS: replacing a motherboard is no big deal. Surprisingly enough, it is one of the cheaper components inside your computer. Not the cheapest, but one of them.

the question is what does a motherboard now a days not do in a pc. the ones with LAN, VGA, PS/2, USB 1,2,3,4 do just about everthing expect process and store data. that is the backbone and main supporting organs of the pc. the cpu is just a brain, the processing unit. ram, hardrive store and restore things and optical drive(DVD/CD bay) you can kinda guess

The big board on the inside that has the processor, RAM, PCI cards etc attached. Essentially the biggest part of the PC.

the mobo as it is sometimes referred to is the piece that has all of the necessary components that your sys needs to work such as it fransfers data to all necessary data to other parts such as video card and such it links everything together and it located inside the system and its a very expensive piece of the system it looks like a circuitbourd that has things growing out of it
