I read where amyl acetate was used to somehow harden the felt of piano hammers to give a brighter tone. I was wondering what is in it to give it that property.

First off amyl acetate is extremely flammable (it evolves into a gas that is easily ignited) and a strong irritant. It is also toxic by ingestion so i'm guessing you won't want to get it for personal use but you can purchase it.

amyl acetate, a mixture of isomers, is used as a solvent for nitrocellulose in the manufacture of lacquers, and, because of its banana-like smell, it is used as a fragrance. Amyl acetate is useful in the manufacture of artificial leather, photographic film, artificial glass, celluloid, artificial silk, and furniture polish. Isoamyl acetate is used for dyeing and finishing textiles, perfuming shoe polish, and manufacturing artificial silk, leather, pearls, photographic films, celluloid cements, waterproof varnish and metallic paints. It is also used in artificial glass manufacturing and in the straw hat industry as a constituent of lacquers and stiffening solutions.

Amyl acetate (also pentyl ethanoate, pentyl acetate) is an organic compound and an ester with the chemical formula CH3(CH2)5COOH and the molecular weight 130.18 g/mol. It has a scent similar to bananas which is not detectable by all people. The compound is the condensation product of acetic acid and 1-pentanol. However, esters formed from other pentanol isomers (amyl alcohols), or mixtures of pentanols, are often referred to as amyl acetate.

Hope that helps. =)
