3 MEN GO INTO A MOTEL. THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK SAID THE ROOM IS $30, SO EACH MAN PAID $10 AND WENT TO THE ROOM. A WHILE LATER THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK REALIZED THE ROOM WAS ONLY $25, SO HE SENT THE BELLBOY TO THE 3 GUYS' ROOM WITH $5. ON THE WAY, THE BELLBOY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO SPLIT $5
EVENLY BETWEEN 3 MEN, SO HE GAVE EACH MAN A $1 AND KEPT THE OTHER $2 FOR HIMSELF.THIS MEANT THAT THE 3 MEN EACH PAID $9 FOR THE ROOM, WHICH IS A TOTAL OF $27, ADD THE $2 THAT TH E BELLBOY KEPT = $29.
WHERE IS THE OTHER DOLLAR?

The question is phrased wrong. They pay $30 originally but it turns out that it's only $25. The bellboy decides to do the guys a favor and keeps the $2 as a tip. So they effectively pay $27 dollars for the room. this means that each pays $9 for the room and each gets a dollar back. I remember that one from when I was little.

One of the key components of the mathematics is misleading, unpertainant. In the end, the three men have 3 dollars, the bellboy has 2, and the man behind the desk has 25, which all adds up to 30. The 2 dollars that they boy keeps is counted twice, i.e. the 9 dollars included the price of his "tip" already. So the math is the 27 they paid, and the 3 they got back=30.

The right statement should be: three men eventually paid $27: $25 to the motel, and $2 kept by the bellboy.

The original $30 is distributed into three parts: $25 to the motel, $3 returned to the 3 men, and $2 kept by the bellboy.

The men still overpaid for the room because it was $25 not $27

$25 + $3 + $2 = $30

Okay, 25 bucks went to the hotel, 3 dollars went to the men, 2 went to the boy. In the end, no money is "lost" as the problem implies.
