Well, if you don't know what his likes/dislikes are, perhaps you can find out more about the person retiring (who the party is for) and can discuss him (the retiree) some and that may branch off into other things about the two of you that you can talk about.

Such as, if the retiree worked for a power company, you could talk about that, or was he a mechanic? you could tell a story about your car, whatever it is try to start with something in common (both at the retirement party) then look for clues on things he says and how he reacts and what he says, for things that he would like to talk more about.

Good luck!

Start off by saying hi or something like that. Then bring up something about the guy who is retiring because you both seem to know him. If not that, talk about something regarding the fellowship meeting. That should ease your tensions and his. Take it from there with something you might have in common.

Break the Ice.. ask him how he is doing today. and start from there.Maybe ask him a question or two about the fellowship , his interest and studies..then go from there..find something about him you both have in common and start talking. Keep it flowing not not too boring.
Good luck

start out by chatting with him about the life of the guy who is retiring. Then, ask him some questions based on his responses. Soon, you will get the courage to be more bold and ask some unabated questions. good luck

Guys will like you if you are rather quiet, they like to be aggressive and dominated the conversation. You will do fine just be yourself, don't try so hard, the peaceful atmosphere will create
a conversation about most anything.Be yourself. That is the most important thing in conversations.Think of things that make you happy.

What are you interested in?

That would be the first thing I suggest. If you know nothing about what he likes, the best thing would be to talk about what you like. Once you discover something you both like, you can expand on that. But, if you try to talk about something you think he likes, but you don't, you may end up sounding like an idiot. You know most about what you're interested in.

Take it from there

Best of luck!

You could talk about retirement and what you'd each do if you could retire right now. Safe but you could learn something about him and how he thinks too.

Well, just bring up different subjects, like what you do for fun...what you like to eat and do. Things like that. This may help...I hope it does. Good Luck!
