You would think a fellow minority would have enough respect to change his number in honor of the first minority to break through the barriers in the Major Leagues.

Lol, if sports figures thought that wearing a heros number was honoring it then they would never retire numbers....The ultimate way to honor someone is to have noone ever wear that number again.
What a disrespectful piece of lard, he wouldnt even be pitching right now if not for Jackie.

To the moron saying that the question is racist....I am a minority and if someone paved the way for me I would do everything I could to honor them. Obviously Mariano does not feel the same way which is fine but I have the right to think he is a piece of crap for doing it.

No he's not any longer. it really is being slightly harsh. in case you knew some thing in any respect about Mariano Rivera, you would comprehend that he's between the most, if no longer the most, respectful participant in baseball. you would also comprehend that he has each proper to placed on #40 2 and feels that he's honoring Jackie Robinson by persevering with to placed on it. You call him a egocentric fruitcake? I wager if someone observed as you that on the following, you would record them now, would not you? i do not imagine that Mariano is going to study this and prevent his form in simple terms because you pick him to. Did this question in simple terms pop into your head by surprise? there have been different gamers who were allowed to proceed donning 40 2 a the time at the same time as it became retired, in 1997 in the course of the fiftieth anniversary in case you probably did not comprehend that. additionally they persevered to placed on it, jointly with Mo Vaughn, an African-American, did that make him a "egocentric fruitcake" besides? Or are you in effortless words anti-Yankee? You communicate about appreciate, yet then you commence throwing out insults, what does that say about you? Ah, I also see that you're a pink Sox fan. Do you actually care about Mariano Rivera donning #40 2, or are you in effortless words taking an probability to take a cheap shot at a Yankee--interior the month of February?

"No single person is bigger than the game of baseball, no one except Jackie Robinson," he said. "He remains bigger than the game."
As a tribute, Selig announced that the number on Robinson's jersey, No. 42, would be retired. Athletes now wearing the number may continue to do so, but it won't be reissued.
One of the 13 players who were wearing No. 42 when Jackie Robinson's number was retired throughout the majors on April 15, 1997. The rest are:
Mo Vaughn, Tom Goodwin, Mariano Rivera, Mike Jackson, Lenny Webster, Jason Schmidt, Jose Lima, Scott Karl, Dennis Cook, Kirk Rueter, Buddy Groom and Marc Sagmoen
These players were allowed to continue wearing No. 42 if they so chose.
Snce Mariano was wearing the jersey in his memory on April 15, 1997 I wold say it is not disrespectful since he still wears it in his memory not since it was a lucky jersey.

I disagree. He wore #42 since 1995 which was before MLB decided to retire #42 throughout the league to pay tribute to Jackie Robinson. Rivera is also not the only player to wear #42 so, don't single him out. The Cardinals retired #42 for a second time for Bruce Sutter, the Mets, Angels and Red Sox let Mo Vaughn wear #42 as well.

What kind of question is that??? I can tell you for certain that it is NOT his intention to be disrespectful of Mr Robinson by wearing the number. If anything, I am sure it would be the other way around. I bet he kept the number as a show of respect FOR Jackie.
In case you didn't know, the number is permanently retired by MLB except for people that already wore the number before the retirement several years ago. Some changed numbers while others kept it and are allowed to keep it. I know for the other NY team, Benny Agbayani wore the number and kept it until he left the MLB to persue stardom in Japan.

Strictly speaking Rivera's number isn't retired. Any player who was wearing 42 on April 15, 1997 (the 50th anniversary of Robinsons major league debut, and the date of MLB's proclamation) was allowed to continue to wear it for the rest of his career. But it couldn't any longer be given out to any other players. That's called a "grandfather" clause, and you'll find such clauses just about everywhere you look. In fact, when batting helmets with ear flaps were made a part of the rules, any hitter that was not already wearing such a helmet was allowed to not wear one for the rest of his career.
It's not disrespectful of Rivera in the least. I'm not certain that I'd say the same of your question.

no, he's not, I hate the yanks soooo much, but I have to take Rivera's side here, he wears the #42 in honor of his Childhood hero who was ummmm.......... oh yeah Jackie Robinson, which is why lots of people have wore that #, just like that 1 guy said Mo Vaughn wore it, and also 1 person who I've met is a great person, and always talks to fans and is 1 of nicest people in sports who wears it is Jose Lima, and some other athletes in other sports have wore #42 in honor of him like NBA players Kevin Willis, and Elton Brand, Jerry Stackhouse and the young Sean May, so I think that's a dumb thing if anyone thinks Rivera is bein disrespectful doin that

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! He had that number before the rule was put in place so it's his till he retires. He is a class act and is not disgracing the number. It will be interesting to see what happens when the Yankees retire his number.
