There are two theories on this. One is where the universe is expanding infinitely and will always continue to grow untill the end of time. The second has the universe expanding for a while and then it comes to stop, at which point it then receeds back on itself untill all matter in the whole universe comes crashing back into one another. Sorry to say, but no one knows how big the univrse really is at the present moment. Even using light waves to figure this out won't work. The light we are receiving right now from distant starts is billions of years old, much to out of date to be used on how large the universe is now. I also believe that it is just not humanly possible to imagine or understand just how big it really could be.

So far, the universe extends from 10 billion to 20 billion light years (average 15 billion light years). This is the distance astronomers have been able to see the first matter in the universe. Beyond that is the radiation at 3º above absolute zero that comes from the big bang.

there is no end to space...our universe is not the only universe out there. just like our galaxy is not the only one out there. a universe is made up of galaxies. i dont know if even our most famous scientist know all the galaxies in our own universe yet. here is a link that might be of interest to you.
