im gonna leave my computer over night because i am downloading a game that will take a long time, and will do a full virus scan too

My computer often comes on at 5:30 AM and stays on until 1:30AM and it has never overheated except when the fan on the power supply had failed.
Even without the power supply fan working, the computer ran for over an hour before the voltage fluctuations started making things go wacky.
Don't worry about full system scans or overnight downloads.

I don't think it will overheat. I just don't know if you aren't watching it if it will actually download the entire game without any problem. It might be best if you do it during the day. I'd be worried that the computer might lock up or something.

A computer can run for very long periods of time...as long as the fans inside are working. You could probably leave that computer on for a month and it will be fine.

It probably will not overheat. The fans and vents are designed to keep it cool enough to run for days or weeks at a time.

as long as your fans are running properly there's no reason to worry about an overnight...no reason to shut down at all really.
before the recent headaches i've gotten experimenting with vista i prob had my puter running about 3-4 weeks in between restarts and I really can't remember the last time I shut down completely for any length of time

make sure you turn off the virus scan it will take longer to down load then and it will slow up the computer
disable the virus scan
and but still down load your program

No, nothing will happen. As long as it has proper cooling. I've left my pc on for days.
