Depending on a few things, your city, the schools history, the coach, how have they done in the past, your competition, etc. your preparation could vary.
I would suggest that if you are not running everyday, you better start now. Coaches want to see endurance, skills, likability, competitive nature, etc.
I went to a high school where we competed at the state level each year. Week 1 tryouts went like this:
Monday: 8 a.m. start, Run 5 miles, coach kept track of how you finished (with the pack or behind). Go home come back at 1:30. Run 5 miles
Tuesday: Same start, 8 miles in the afternoon.
Wednesday: Same start, Made first Cuts. (People who got cut here were not fit enough, or didn't have good friendships with the right players/coaches.) 1:30 - 3 on 3 drills (yes, first time we touched a ball), 5 on 5's, dribbling drills.
Thursday: Scrimmaging, wind sprints, drills, drills, and more drills (5 hour practice), (End of practice they split the team up into Varsity and JV. About 22 players for 18 spots on each, everyone else was cut.
Mid next week the rest either didn't make it, or were cut.
Be up on your skills, your endurance, and willing to give it all like your down by 1 with 5 minutes to play. Coaches will notice you.
Find out on the first day or two of tryouts how many others are trying out for the position you want. Make yourself flexible to move to other positions if it will help the team. Maybe they are weak at Left Midfield or something.
Good luck!!!
