Sony is the PC I would suggest - I've had two vaio's that have been workhorses.
However, its too bad you won't consider a mac, because I have a few of those too, they are leaps and bounds above any PC I have ever used. - and don't give me the software debate, virtual pc works so well these days, you'd think you were running a pc at the time you need to use "pc only" software.

OK...so lets start off since i just bought a laptop and was researching for 3 months on these
Apples are terrible ..The system in it is confusing and terrible...they are also the most expensive and lots of programs wont work on it...price:expensive $1500 to $4000
Hp's are more of a student pc...small , not much memory, security and office programs... they are fairy cheap (500 to 1500)
but i would not buy them
Compaq and hp are combined companies now but compaqs are a really low class laptop....they are cheap as hell but decent quality...these are good for a low budget....$400 to $1000...I would buy if I didnt have that much of a need for them but the basics.
Dell's..the ones you wont buy...to tell you the truth these are probably the best option even though i decided on a gateway...
dell's are met with their price..if you pay high for them you will get extremely good quality..if you pay low such as 500 to 600 dollars then you will still get good quality..I almost decided on one but i wanted something with a little more sting that was perfect for me...but anyways...dells can vary from $500 to $3000 dollars..try dell.com and take a good look,,its also great because you can customize it...
GATEWAY..The one i decided on was a gateway that was on sale for $1000 but was actually retailing for $1500..insanely fast speed...intel centrino core 2 duo..and about 250 g of memory...
Gateways are best for home, pc replacement, or if you are a teenage or young adult that wil download movies and music....they are perfect size and i would advise to you...they go from $749 to $3000...
Toshiba's are for businessmen and have lots of security features in them such as fingerprint recognition and voice recognition...these are very expensive up to $8000 dollars..
ONE MORE THING: When you do buy your computer...ask for windows xp instead and a extra copy of vista....because i am having problems with my webcam and limewire on vista...
THANKS HAVE FUN PICKING

Hewlett Packard are my favorite.
I had a Compaq Pressario a long time ago and it lasted a whole 7 years (it overheated and the back melted so that was my fault)
I currently have an HP Pavilion dv9000 and it is amazing; I absolutely love it! It is a desktop replacement (a bigger version of a laptop, but still portable) and it works great.

I'm really, really enjoying my HP dv9000t series. Nice 17" screen, amazing processing, and great graphics. Got it for about 2K and I can play World of Warcraft and iTunes at the same time without a bit of lag.
It's also the number one selling computer, or at least it was back in December.

Well i have no idea why you wont consider a dell. They are really the best. But the next best brand i would trust is HP...they can be a little pricey but they are good quality and reliable

We got Averatec. I had never heard of it but we love it and it's done great, it's got a 17 in. screen. Do not get a Compaq Presario- 2 people I know had problems with it.
