In short, both and neither. Popular music is, and always has been about stimulation and not necessarily art. Since the invention of the radio, the songs that are most successful are the ones that get lots of plays on the air, and that stand out from the other music. So essentially, these types of songs are more like commercials for the band, and less like works of high art. In essence, it's more about ear candy (and eye candy lately) than anything else. That being said there are A FEW bands like Queen, The Beatles, and Bob Dylan that have been able to achieve a higher creativity level while at the same time, putting it to a "catchy, stimulating tune"

Well, to me, there are two different types of people. The lyric people and the music people. The lyric people are all about the lyrics and like the song because the lyrics are really deep and meaningful. The music people don't really care about the lyrics but as long as it sounds cool and has a good beat, they'll like the song. I'm more of a lyric person because to me, music is about the words and expressing how you feel. But I do sometime just listen to songs because they sound cool.
