During Spring tides, high tides are higher than average AND low tides are lower then average.
During Neap tides, high tides are lower than average AND low tides are higher then average.

Both the sun and the moon have an affect on the tides with the moon having the stronger of the two effects.

During Spring tides, the Sun and Moon are pulling together and during Neap tides the Sun and the Moon are pulling at right angles to each other.

Spring tides occur when the moon is full or their is no moon.
Neap tides occur when the moon is half (waning(on it's way to full moon) or waxing(on it's way to no moon).

When the gravitational effects of the Sun and the Moon combine, we get spring tides, which have nothing to do with the season of spring. The term refers to the action of the seas springing out and then springing back. These are times of high high tides and low low tides. A week later, during either of the two quarter Moon phases, when the Sun and Moon are at right angles to each other and their tidal influences partially cancel each other out, neap tides occur, and the tidal range is minimal. In fact, because the oceans take a bit of time to catch up to the geometry of the Moon, spring and neap tides usually occur about a day after the respective lunar cycles.

neap tides occur when the sun, earth and the moon are on right angle while spring tides occur when the sun, earth and the moon are on straight angles.

S=sun E=earth M=moon

Neap: ______M
______S____lEl

Spring: S M

lEl
=the waters of the earth are not much gravitated by the sun and earth

=the waters of the earth are affected due to the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon.
