Wander around the Udagawacho district of Shibuya (the area around and beyond the Tokyu Hands store, for which you can find directions in any Tokyo guidebook).

Udagawacho has the highest concentration of record stores in the world.

It's also just up the road from Shibuya Tower Records, the largest such store on the planet.

Good luck.

The easiest place to find music CDs is Tower Records in Shibuya, or maybe even easier is the Tsutaya directly in front of the Shibuya eki Hachiko crossing. The various listings and ranking charts will also help you to buy music that is on the top 10 of the various charts. There is more than one ranking chart, such as the Karaoke top 10, FM Tokyo top 10, FM Yokohama top 10, JWave top 10, etc. Both Tsutaya and Tower Records have listening stations for you to browse and sample the music CDs. Cheaper music CDs can be found in the various used CD and recycle shops dotted towards the end of Shibuya's Center Gai. such as a Disk Union store.

There is also a great CD shop in Tokyo called "Disc Union." There is one just outside of Shinjuku Station, one in Shibuya (I think) and one in Ochanomizu. I'd check them out. They have lots of used stuff cheap, and you can find western bands and Japanese bands.

Tower Records in Shibuya was my number one choice when I lived there, it has a great selection of both Japanese and North American music.

It also has English magazines, which made me very happy at the time.
