My landlord was charged with raping a girl as of Tuesday. [ http://www.mcall.com/news/local/police/all-4rapefeb23,0,2349055.story ] I always felt really uncomfortable around him, but this has taken it to a whole new level. Is him being charged a liable reason to break my lease? I have until October, but I don't feel safe living here anymore. Please help.

im sure there is a way out of it because you should be able to feel safe in your home...i would call your local attornys office and ask them what you can and cant do and they should be able to give you a free consultation! they will inform you of everything you need to know

Apparently not in California. I was just reading a true story about a woman who was raped in her own apartment by a neighbor, the landlord will not let her out of her lease despite the pleadings of numerous legal and support groups. It seems that while the case is still pending, he can't be considered a legitimate reason for her to break her lease, at least according to the landlord and lawyers.

Why don't you call the police station and speak with them. You may have to get a lawyer if you break the lease but you can probably get out of it.

I would definitely seek legal advice and get out of there as soon as you can!! It might be smart to break your lease anyway if you feel that uncomfortable with him around.

simply tell him that your job is transferring out of state of you have no choice but to go. then see if you could work out something to where you could give him a couple of extra dollars on your next rent check. apologize tell him your really sorry but you have to go.
