I lost my spare key on a trip, and only have a the bottom portion of my original key. Can a locksmith or dealer make a new one?

Key cutting machines only need the toothed portion to make a replacement of a simple key, but it will be more difficult to align without the upper portion. If your car had a key with a microchip, a new key can not be made without the upper part of the key. Those keys need to come from the auto dealership and expect to PAY for it because they aren't cheap.
The upper part of the key does help the locksmith find the correct key blank to use.

a locksmith or a dealer can make/get you a key even if you dont have anything to copy.
a clerk with a key machine at a hardware or auto parts store usually needs the entire key to copy.
the difference is cost- locksmith/dealer is expensive, clerk at store is cheap.

They should be able to.Take it to a locksmith first. Usually that might need the whole key to measure where the cutting starts but it is worth a shot.

A dealer should be able to make you a key using your Vin #, especially if it is fairly new.

i broke the tip off my key. and two of the prawns are off. they said i need the top of the key to make a copy.
