I was curious what a Wake is after a Funeral? Why do people have them? My Grandfather passed away and there was a Funeral and a Wake. I couldn't attend either thats why I am asking.

In old times before embalming and EEG's friends and family stayed awake for the night before the funeral and burial to watch the body and be sure the deceased really was deceased. It became a time to remember and celebrate the one departed. In some cultures the wake is very somber, in others its a festive occasion. In some areas, there is a pre-funeral visitation and an after funeral meal or reception. They all give closure through an occasion of specific memory both of the deceased and a time of remembering and saying farewell.

I believe a Wake comes before a funeral. Usually a couple days before. It's also known as the "viewing". It's just a couple days for friends and family to drop by and pay their respects, because most people don't want to intrude on a family affair (the funeral service). After the funeral, there is a reception. That's for getting together, remembering, reminiscing, eating, and celebrating the loved ones life.
That's about it... they suck but they are a part of life.

A Wake is a big party where the friends and family celebrate the life of the person instead of morning there death. Also there is a ton of drinking involved so that is probably why you were not allowed to go. My condolences on your grandfathers passing.
