If you are talking about the song by Bobbi Gentry. It is not the Tallahassee Bridge. It is the Tallahatchie Bridge.
The song does not say for sure what is thrown off the bridge although many have speculated that it was a baby. In the movie Billy Joe throws over a rag doll then commits suicide. He commits suicide because he is afraid he is gay.
The movie took liberties (based on what so many people interpreted the song to imply) in throwing off the rag doll since the song really does not answer the question as to what he threw off.

It was the Tallahatchee bridge its in Mississippi. Bobbie Gentry was the artist they sang it. She never would say what it was they threw but im thinking it was a baby.
